Using keywords on your website can be confusing. Website owners can over-do keywords or ignore them because it’s hard to know what’s effective to do. Website owners can actually find profitable keywords for their website – words that help them get found on the world wide web, including locally.
If you use your keywords too many times it’s not going to look natural and search engines can ‘see’ this. If you don’t take the time to do keyword research – for your market – how are you going to get any visitors from the search engines?
One goal should be to get the pages on your website listed for your keywords on the first page of all the major search engines. If you do your research and find the right keyword phrases, this will bring targeted visitors to your site.
Even with many paid keyword research tools available, you can get the best start in you keyword research with Google’s keyword tool (to find it, simply Google: Google keyword tool). Type in a broad term for your market and look at the results that are returned. You can also use local area name in the search.
You can sort the results by the number of searches a month. Note that some keywords have a great number of monthly searches. You should realize that many of these terms are already being highly marketed and it will be hard to get a top ranking in the search engines with so much competition.
You can go to the Google search page and type in these terms to see how many pages are returned. If there are more than 100,000 results, it will take a long time to beat out the top sites. To get top results fairly quickly (within a couple of weeks), you need to use keyword terms that have less than 30,000 – 50,000 pages listed on the results page. That will depend on what kind of content you are going to use. Videos will help you get top rankings even if there are 50,000 results.
Press releases, using your keywords, can get you on the first page within a day if your keyword term does not have a lot of competition. However, press releases won’t always hold a top position. You either have to keep writing them, or market the press release url.
Back at the Google keyword research tool, what you want to do is look over the keywords list that you have. Take the keywords that are appropriate for your website and plug them individually back into the tool. This will give you even more results, including terms that do not have as much competition from other marketers.
This is an essential step for marketing your website on the internet. Even if your website is already built, you can do this research and then add the keyword terms that you find to your website – in a natural way. You can use a main keyword phrase on the home page and secondary keywords on other pages within your website.
If your website is a blog, use the secondary keywords as the names of your categories. And use secondary keywords as part of the titles in new blog posts.
If you don’t determine what the targeted keywords – that people use when they search in Google and other search engines – are.. it is going to be hard to get the right people to visit your website.
On the other hand, when you find keywords that have significant amounts of monthly searches AND are not hard to rank for in the search engines – these are called the ‘money keywords’ for your website and you will attract a lot of new visitors – prospects – to your business.
